Method
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
- In a skillet over medium heat, cook sausage until no pink remains, breaking it into crumbles.
- Add butter to skillet. Once melted, sprinkle in flour and stir for 1–2 minutes to remove raw taste.
- Gradually whisk in milk, stirring constantly until gravy thickens (about 4–5 minutes).
- Season gravy with salt, pepper, and any optional spices. Adjust to taste.
- Place half the biscuits into the bottom of the greased baking dish. Pour half of the gravy on top.
- Layer the remaining biscuits and pour over the rest of the gravy. Top with cheese if using.
- Bake uncovered for 25–30 minutes, until golden and bubbling. Tent with foil if biscuits brown too quickly.
- Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.
Notes
To make it lighter, use turkey sausage and 2% milk. For extra flavor, add sautéed vegetables like spinach or roasted red peppers. Leftovers store well in the fridge for up to 3 days.
