Method
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a 9x13 inch casserole dish.
- In a skillet over medium heat, brown the sausage. Drain any excess grease and set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper.
- Layer cubed bread, cooked sausage, diced onion, and any optional vegetables into the casserole dish.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the casserole, making sure all bread is soaked. Top with shredded cheese.
- Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden brown and fully set. Let rest 5 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
To make ahead, assemble the casserole the night before, cover, and refrigerate. In the morning, bake as directed. This dish is freezer-friendly too – bake first, then cool and freeze for up to 2 months.
