Ingredients

  • 1 medium green cabbage chopped
  • 14 oz smoked sausage sliced into rounds
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 medium onion sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • red pepper flakes optional for heat

Equipment

  • Large Skillet

Method

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sausage slices and cook until browned and slightly crispy around the edges.
  2. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the sliced onions and cook until soft and translucent.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  5. Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet. Season with salt, black pepper, and paprika. Stir well to coat the cabbage in the buttery mixture.
  6. Cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage becomes tender and slightly caramelized.
  7. Return the sausage to the skillet and add the remaining butter. Stir everything together and cook for another 5 minutes so the flavors combine.
  8. Sprinkle with red pepper flakes if desired and serve warm.

Notes

For the best flavor, allow the cabbage to caramelize slightly instead of rushing the cooking process. Smoked sausage adds the richest flavor, but turkey sausage or kielbasa also work well.
