  • 4 cups fresh broccoli florets steamed or blanched
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese grated
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper or to taste
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
Optional Topping
  • 0.5 cup breadcrumbs for crunchy topping
  • 1 tbsp butter melted, to mix with breadcrumbs

Method
 

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a casserole dish and set aside.
  2. Steam or blanch broccoli florets until bright green and slightly tender. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Whisk in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes until smooth.
  4. Gradually whisk in milk. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.
  5. Remove from heat. Stir in shredded cheddar until melted and smooth. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  6. Fold the steamed broccoli into the cheese sauce. Pour mixture into the prepared casserole dish and smooth the top.
  7. If using, mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle over the top.
  8. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is bubbling.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

Make ahead: Assemble and refrigerate before baking. For best results, add breadcrumb topping just before baking.
Variations: Add cooked chicken or turkey, mix in other veggies like cauliflower or carrots, or try gluten-free flour to accommodate dietary needs.
