- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a casserole dish and set aside.
- Steam or blanch broccoli florets until bright green and slightly tender. Drain and set aside.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Whisk in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes until smooth.
- Gradually whisk in milk. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.
- Remove from heat. Stir in shredded cheddar until melted and smooth. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- Fold the steamed broccoli into the cheese sauce. Pour mixture into the prepared casserole dish and smooth the top.
- If using, mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle over the top.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is bubbling.
- Let cool slightly before serving warm.
Notes
Make ahead: Assemble and refrigerate before baking. For best results, add breadcrumb topping just before baking.
Variations: Add cooked chicken or turkey, mix in other veggies like cauliflower or carrots, or try gluten-free flour to accommodate dietary needs.
