Recreate the famous Pepper Lunch at home! This Japanese-style sizzling beef and rice dish is packed with umami flavors, buttery goodness, and a hint of black pepper. Cooked on a hot plate or skillet, it’s an easy and fun meal to make.

- 1 cup cooked Japanese short-grain rice π
- 200g (7oz) thinly sliced beef (ribeye or sirloin) π₯©
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter π§
- 1 tbsp soy sauce πΆ
- 1 tsp oyster sauce
- Β½ tsp garlic powder π§
- Β½ tsp black pepper (or to taste) πΆοΈ
- ΒΌ cup corn kernels π½
- 2 tbsp chopped green onions πΏ
- 1 tbsp neutral oil (for cooking)
For the Signature Pepper Lunch Sauce:
- 2 tbsp soy sauce πΆ
- 1 tbsp honey π―
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tsp mirin (or rice vinegar)
- Β½ tsp black pepper πΆοΈ
Instructions
- Prepare the sauce: Mix all the sauce ingredients in a small bowl and set aside.
- Preheat a cast iron skillet (or non-stick pan) over high heat and add a little oil.
- Arrange the rice in the center of the pan, placing the butter on top.
- Surround the rice with thinly sliced beef, corn, and green onions.
- Drizzle the sauce over the beef and rice, then season with black pepper.
- Let it sizzle! Cook for 2β3 minutes without stirring to get that signature crispy rice bottom.
- Mix everything together while cooking for another minute. Serve hot!
