Description

Indulge in a slice of nostalgia with this rich and creamy Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie. Made from scratch using simple ingredients, this dessert boasts a velvety chocolate filling nestled in a flaky crust. It’s a timeless treat that’s sure to satisfy any chocolate lover’s craving.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 egg yolks, beaten
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 prepared pie crust (homemade or store-bought no shame here!)

Instructions

  1. Pre-bake that crust. If using a store-bought crust, follow package directions for blind baking. Let it cool completely.
  2. Mix dry ingredients. In a medium saucepan, whisk together cocoa powder, flour, and sugar until evenly combined.
  3. Add egg yolks and milk. Slowly stir in beaten egg yolks and milk. Place over medium heat and keep whisking. (And I mean keep whisking, friend. It’s a workout, but worth it.)
  4. Cook ‘til thick. Bring mixture to a gentle boil and keep stirring until it thickens into a smooth pudding-like texture about 7–10 minutes.
  5. Flavor boost. Remove from heat and stir in that fragrant vanilla extract.
  6. Assemble the pie. Pour the chocolate filling into your cooled crust. Smooth the top with a spatula.
  7. Chill it. Pop the pie in the fridge for at least 2 hours to set. Patience is key I won’t judge if you sneak a warm spoonful.
  8. Top it off. Optional: Add whipped cream, chocolate shavings, or a few old-fashioned chocolate stars for a fun throwback vibe.

Notes

  • Preventing a Soggy Crust: Ensure the pie crust is fully cooled before adding the filling to maintain its flakiness.

  • Achieving Smooth Filling: Constant stirring while cooking the filling prevents lumps and ensures a silky texture.

  • Storage: Store any leftovers in the refrigerator, covered, for up to 3 days.
